Our beliefs about health and beauty have a major impact on our body image and self-esteem. My guest today is Diana Herrera. As a model and beauty pageant contestant turned educator, Diana knows this better than anyone. She grew up in an environment where her worth was completely tied to her appearance, but now she’s shifted that mindset and has learned to love and accept herself (and her body) as it is.

Diana knew that she needed to let go of her obsession with thinness after becoming a mother to 5 daughters. She’s committed to passing on body acceptance and self-love to her girls, so they don’t have to go through the struggles that she did.

A few highlights of our conversation:

  • What it was like to grow up in a household that was focused on appearance
  • Her experience as a model and a beauty pageant participant
  • What it took to overcome her struggles with an eating disorder and disordered eating
  • Tips for dealing with a bad body image day

And make sure you listen for the part towards the end where she shares a GREAT tip for how to improve your body image and to embrace the intuitive eating process overall. There are SO many things she shares that you’ll be able to apply in your life, including a strategy she uses each day in front of the mirror.

Whether you’re looking to improve your own body image, or to be a better role model for your kids, or if you are just curious to hear about Diana’s modeling and pageant experience, there’s something in this episode for everyone.

Key Quotes

The journey is already part of the healing.” - Diana Herrera

When you have a bad body image day, go to your closet, find the clothes that really make you happy, that you know fit you well, and that will bring you joy when you look in the mirror.”  - Diana Herrera
